Therapy vs. Coaching - Which is Best for Me?

Therapy vs. Intuitive Coaching: Which One Do You Need?

By Kristy Parke | Radiant Life Consulting

"Should I see a therapist or a coach?"

It's one of the most common questions I get, and it's an important one to answer clearly.

Because here's the truth: therapy and coaching serve different purposes. You might need one, the other, or both—but knowing the difference will help you get the right support at the right time.

Let me break it down.

The Core Difference

Therapy looks backward to heal the past.
Coaching looks forward to create the future.

That's the simplest way to think about it. But let's go deeper.

What Therapy Does

Therapy is designed to:

  • Process past trauma and wounds

  • Treat mental health conditions (depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc.)

  • Understand how your past is affecting your present

  • Heal psychological and emotional damage

  • Develop coping strategies for mental health challenges

Therapists are licensed mental health professionals trained in specific therapeutic modalities. They're qualified to diagnose and treat mental health conditions.

When You Need Therapy

You should see a therapist if you're experiencing:

  • Clinical depression or anxiety

  • Trauma (recent or from childhood)

  • Relationship patterns rooted in past wounds

  • Grief or loss that's overwhelming your daily life

  • Mental health symptoms that interfere with functioning

  • Self-destructive behaviors or thoughts

Therapy helps you understand and heal your past so it stops controlling your present.

What Intuitive Coaching Does

Coaching is designed to:

  • Create clarity for your future

  • Make aligned decisions in the present

  • Navigate major life transitions

  • Access your inner knowing and wisdom

  • Move from stuck to forward motion

  • Find what makes you feel alive

Coaches are not mental health professionals. We don't diagnose or treat mental health conditions. We help you move forward, not process the past.

When You Need Coaching

You should see a coach if you're:

  • At a crossroads and can't decide which path to take

  • Feeling stuck or uninspired with no clear reason

  • Successful on paper but unfulfilled

  • Navigating a major life transition (career, retirement, etc.)

  • Knowing what you "should" do but it doesn't feel right

  • Ready to make changes but not sure where to start

Coaching helps you create the future you want, starting from where you are now.

What Makes Intuitive Coaching Different from Regular Coaching

Traditional coaching uses questions, accountability, and goal-setting to help you move forward.

Intuitive coaching adds another dimension:

  • Listening to what's underneath your words

  • Accessing your inner knowing through intuitive guidance

  • Clearing energetic blocks with energy medicine

  • Working with your whole self - body, mind, emotions, spirit

Think of it this way:

  • Traditional coaching helps you get clear on what you want and how to get there

  • Intuitive coaching helps you access what you already know deep down but can't hear through the noise

Can You Do Both?

Absolutely! Many people do.

Here's how they work together:

Therapy helps you process why you keep choosing unavailable partners (understanding the pattern from your childhood).

Coaching helps you figure out what you actually want in a relationship and how to create it (moving forward with new awareness).

Therapy helps you understand why you're so afraid of change (processing the fear's origins).

Coaching helps you take the next step anyway (creating movement despite the fear).

Therapy helps you heal from burnout and understand what led to it.

Coaching helps you redesign your life to prevent it from happening again.

You probably want therapy if:

  • You're dealing with trauma or mental health symptoms

  • Past wounds keep showing up in your present life

  • You need to understand why you do what you do

  • You're in crisis or experiencing suicidal thoughts

  • Your past feels unprocessed and overwhelming

You probably want coaching if:

  • You're functional but stuck

  • You need to make a decision and logic isn't helping

  • You want to create something new but don't know how

  • You're at a crossroads with no clear path forward

  • You know something needs to change but can't name what

  • You're ready to move forward but need support

You might need both if:

  • You're in therapy but also navigating a major life transition

  • You've processed the past but still feel stuck in the present

  • You want support on multiple levels - healing AND creating

What If You're Not Sure?

If you're reading this and thinking, "I don't know which one I need," here's my advice:

Start with the most pressing issue.

If you're experiencing mental health symptoms, severe anxiety, or unprocessed trauma, start with therapy.

If you're functional but stuck, at a crossroads, or ready to create something new—start with coaching.

And know that you can always add the other form of support later. They're not mutually exclusive.

A Word About Coaching and Mental Health

Here's something important: Coaches should never try to replace therapy.

If I'm working with a client and I notice signs of depression, trauma, or other mental health concerns, I'll refer them to a therapist. That's not my area of expertise, and it would be unethical for me to try to work with those issues.

Good coaches know their limits and refer out when needed.

What to Expect from Intuitive Coaching

If you decide coaching is what you need, here's what working with me looks like:

We focus on:

  • Where you are now

  • Where you want to go

  • What's blocking your clarity

  • What you already know but can't access

  • Practical next steps you can take

We use:

  • Intuitive guidance to access your inner knowing

  • Energy medicine to clear blocks

  • Practical coaching to create actionable steps

  • Deep listening to what's underneath the surface

Sessions are:

  • Conversational and collaborative

  • Focused on forward movement

  • Grounded in your real life (not just "spiritual")

  • Designed to create lasting change, not temporary relief

The Next Step

If you are still unsure, that's okay. We can talk about it.

I offer a free 20-minute consultation where we can discuss:

  • Where you are right now

  • What kind of support would be most helpful

  • Whether coaching is the right fit for you

  • And if it's not, I'll help you find what is

No pressure. No pitch. Just exploration.
